A Gateway to History and Adventure

Nestled along the banks of the Coosa River, the City of Wetumpka had long been the hidden gem of Central Alabama. Known by the locals for its rich history, scenic beauty, and vibrant downtown, Wetumpka offers something for everyone.

However, Wetumpka hasn't stayed under the radar. The world took notice in 2021 when HGTV's Home Town Takeover featured the city for its inaugural season. Hosts Ben and Erin Napier led a transformative revitalization of homes, businesses, and public spaces, showcasing Wetumpka's charm and fostering community pride. Since its TV debut, Wetumpka has become a must-visit spot for many travelers.

Looking to give visitors a warm welcome, the City of Wetumpka has opened the Wetumpka Impact Crater Discovery & Visitor Center. You'll find the Discovery Center in the heart of downtown. It is a collaborative effort between the City of Wetumpka, the Wetumpka Impact Center Commission, and the Elmore County Commission. This dynamic new spot greets visitors and tells them all about local sights, happenings, and the area's one-of-a-kind geological story.

One of the most captivating features of the Discovery Center is its focus on the Wetumpka Impact Crater. Often referred to as "Alabama's Greatest Natural Disaster" the crater was formed approximately 85 million years ago when a massive asteroid collided with Earth. This collision resulted in one of the best preserved marine impact craters you can find anywhere on the planet.

Visitors can delve into the fasinating history of the crater through interactive educational displays, learn about the science behind the impact craters, explore detailed maps and models, and discover how this ancient event has shaped the landscape of Wetumpka.

Of course, the Discovery Center is more than just a portal to the past; it's also your guide to the best of modern-day Wetumpka. Whether you're interested in outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, or family-friendly activities, the center's knowledgeable volunteers can help you plan the perfect itinerary.

So, what are you waiting for? Plan your trip to Central Alabama and start your adventure at the new Wetumpka Impact Crater Discovery & Visitor Center!
