Coon Dog Labor Day Celebration in Cherokee

For a one-of-a-kind experience, visit the Coon Dog Cemetery in the Freedom Hills area near Cherokee (about 20 minutes from Tuscumbia). Established in 1937, this unique cemetery is the final resting place for over 300 coon dogs. The celebration features bluegrass music, buck dancing, and liar's contest, embodying the true spirit of Southern heritage and camaraderie. Come hungry because the world-famous Bishop's Barbecue is on the menu, and you'll get to chat with legends like L.O. Bishop, a longtime friend and supporter of the cemetery. There will also be vendors and memorabilia available for purchase. It's a chance to immerse yourself in local tradition and enjoy a day of entertainment and history unique to this spot. Visitors come for the novelty but stay for the captivating stories and the strong sense of community that defines the event.
