    Eufaula, more than a pass through town to the beach

    A destination all on its own

    For many of us, Eufaula was always a familiar stop along Highway 431 on the way to the beach. We’d admire the grand old homes (and there are plenty!) and, if we were lucky, make a quick stop for donuts. But Eufaula is so much more than just a pass-through town—it’s a destination all on its own.

    Since launching Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns in 2022, Eufaula has been one of our most supportive partners, and we love sharing the stories that make this town special.

    If you’ve ever watched Sweet Home Alabama starring Reese Witherspoon, you might remember the scene where she drives past a "Welcome to Greenville" sign and a row of historic homes. That scene was actually filmed in Eufaula, with the iconic Shorter Mansion making an appearance. As for that Welcome to Greenville sign? It’s now housed in the Barbour County Chamber of Commerce in downtown Eufaula—a fun keepsake from the filming. (And yes, it did cause some confusion for travelers at the time, since Alabama does have areal Greenville off I-65!)

    Another fascinating piece of Eufaula trivia: According to those in the know, Michael Jackson had family ties to the area and visited from time to time. His step-grandfather, affectionately called "Uncle Johnny," lived here. During rehearsals for the Jacksons' Victory Tour in 1984, the family made a trip to Eufaula and even toured Shorter Mansion — where Michael Jackson himself danced on the steps!     Of course, the Eufaula experience has evolved since the King of Pop's last visit, but Shorter Mansion remains a must-see. And speaking of must-tries...

    🍪 The Cookie Cottage

    If you have a sweet tooth, you must stop at The Cookie Cottage. Tonya started this delightful shop after baking from home, and let me tell you—her cookies are the kind that magazine articles rave about! (Literally—we’re raving about them right now!) I’ve sampled cupcakes, cookies, breads... you name it. But my absolute favorite? The butter pecan cookie. It melts in your mouth. The buttercream frosting is divine, too. And don’t worry about the extra indulgence—Eufaula’s walkable downtown makes it easy to get your steps in while hopping from shop to shop!


    🎨 Cotton & Kudzu

    I love discovering new art, and Cotton & Kudzu is my kind of place. This charming shop features artwork by Laura Sonnen Cutchen and other talented local artists, along with stunning floral arrangements that bring life to any space. If you love unique home décor with a touch of Southern charm, you’ll feel right at home here.


    🛍 Just Another Shop

    Don’t let the name fool you—Just Another Shop is anything but ordinary. It’s the first shop you’ll spot when turning onto East Broad Street, and trust me, you may end up spending all your shopping money right here! From a hat bar and game-day gear to candles, clothing, baby gifts, and home décor, this store truly has something for everyone. And if you need to mail a package while you’re in town, they also serve as the local UPS drop-off spot!


    🥜 Superior Pecans & Gifts

    A staple in Eufaula for nearly 100 years, Superior Pecans celebrated its 90th anniversary last fall—and we’re all still celebrating! Located on East Broad Street for almost a decade, this shop (along with Large Mouth Coffee Company) is the perfect place for a pick-me-up. Whether you’re in the mood for a pecan milkshake, fresh-roasted coffee, or a sweet treat, they’ve got you covered. They also ship their famous pecans, which make excellent corporate gifts. I always grab a bag when I’m in town—there’s just something special about the taste of these pecans!


    👗 Red’s Boutique & Chattahoochee Outfitters

    This dynamic duo under one roof offers the perfect shopping solution for couples—tell your honey to browse the outfitters section while you find the perfect dress! Red’s Boutique carries stylish clothing for the whole family, from Sunday best to date-night outfits. On my last two trips to Eufaula, I found gorgeous dresses that have become wardrobe favorites.
