Tiffany Pack - Owner of Dream Key Real Estate

Alabama Foodie Magazine sits down with the owner of Dream Key Real Estate to talk about growth, value, and where to eat first in downtown Athens.

Tiffany Pack has handed over many house keys lately. As the owner of Dream Key Real Estate, she’s had a front-row seat to remarkable growth. Limestone County is now in its seventh straight year as Alabama’s fastest-growing county, and between U.S. Space Command’s relocation, Eli Lilly’s $6 billion investment, and GE Aerospace’s continued expansion, the moving trucks just keep coming.

We caught up with Tiffany over coffee on the square to talk about what’s bringing people in and, more importantly, where she’s sending them to eat once they get here.

She didn’t need long to answer the first question. “It’s the careers, sure. People are following the jobs,” she said. “But the thing that seals it? Cost of living.

The Food Question... where do we eat tonight?

Southern Table wood-fire oysters

I’ve got buyers coming in from all over the country, and they can’t believe what their money can do once they cross into Athens and Limestone County. It’s just more affordable here than the communities around us, and you’re not giving anything up to get it. The schools are great, the people are great, and downtown Athens is alive. That’s a hard combination to beat.”

The food question, she said, comes up faster than anything else. “I’ll be handing over keys, and somebody will go, ‘Okay, real talk, where do we eat tonight?’ Every time. I keep a running list in my head.

The list always starts in the same place, The Southern Table at 105 N. Jefferson Street. The menu reads like a love letter to the South: smoked wings rubbed and sauced six different ways, wood-fired and raw Gulf oysters, fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and remoulade, and a shrimp ceviche with Old Bay crackers and dynamite aioli. The lunch entrees go big, BBQ shrimp and grits with pork belly and shrimp butter, fried Gulf oysters, frog legs, and a Gulf shrimp plate with hushpuppies and apple coleslaw. Daily lunch plates feature smoked chicken with white BBQ sauce, hamburger steak with mushroom and onion gravy, and fried catfish with hushpuppies, classic comfort food any day of the week.

“The Southern Table. No question,” Tiffany said. “If you’ve just moved here and want to feel like you live in Athens, that’s your first stop. The cornbread muffins with whipped salted butter alone are worth the move. It tastes like somebody’s grandmother is back there making sure you eat enough. I’ve sent people there and gotten a text later that just says ‘wow.’”

Salty Cod's Fish and Chips
After The Southern Table, she likes to throw new residents a curveball, and that curveball is The Salty Cod. Tucked just off the historic downtown square, The Salty Cod is a locally owned and operated English-style pub that opened in September 2023, bringing something genuinely different to Athens.

Think authentic British and Irish fare, perfectly grilled steaks, and contemporary takes on traditional dishes, all served up inside a warm, inviting space with two large bars, an open kitchen, gorgeous patio seating, and a drink menu that doesn’t look like anything else in town. The draft list leans British and European, the bottle selection pulls from across Europe and the U.S., and the cocktail menu is a category of its own.

There’s also a gelato, coffee, and pastry shop inside, plus a full butcher shop specializing in dry-aged steaks and meats.

The Salty Cod surprises everybody,” Tiffany said. “You walk in, and it feels like you stepped across the pond — the décor, the atmosphere, the menu, all of it. And then the food comes out, and it’s seriously good. I had a client tell me it was the best steak she’d had in years, and I just smiled because I knew that was coming. It’s one of the most unique places in North Alabama, and it’s right here on our square.
Menu Item at Square at 113
Next on Tiffany’s list is Square at 113 located at 113 S. Marion St., for something honest and unfussy.  The menu is short, sharp, and exactly what you want it to be; a burger dressed the way burgers should be dressed, a bologna sandwich with chips piled right on it, a loaded hot dog buried under nacho cheese, chili, onions, chives, and bacon. Kids get their own combos with sliders and tenders, and on Wednesdays and Sundays, the sides come out swinging: green beans, pinto beans, collard greens, turnip greens, mac and cheese, yams, deviled eggs, and hot water cornbread that tastes the way it’s supposed to taste. There’s always a $5 dessert if you saved room.

“Square at 113 is one of those places that just gets it,” Tiffany said. “It’s not trying to reinvent anything, it’s good food, fair prices, and a Wednesday or Sunday plate that’ll take you straight back to your grandmother’s kitchen. I send people there when they want to eat well and feel at home doing it. That hot water cornbread? Don’t skip it.

As we paid the tab, Tiffany leaned back and looked out toward the courthouse, watching a family she didn’t know cross the street toward The Southern Table.

“You see that? That’s what I love about this job,” she said. “Three months ago, they were probably looking at a map trying to figure out where downtown Athens even was. Now they’re walking to dinner like they’ve lived here their whole lives. That’s how fast this place pulls you in.”

She smiled and added one more thing on her way out the door. “Tell your readers I said welcome home. And tell them to come hungry."
