Stay Safe This Lake Season
As you make plans to enjoy the lake, here are a few safety reminders to help ensure a fun and safe experience for everyone.
On the Water: Boating and Swimming Safety
-
Prepare Your Boat: Make sure your boat is properly maintained and stocked with all required safety equipment before heading out for the season’s first ride.
-
Be a Courteous Captain: Practice safe boating habits and stay alert to others on the water.
-
Life Jackets for All: Always carry U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets for every person onboard.
-
Be Aware of Electric Shock Risks: Ensure your boat’s electrical systems and dock wiring are safely maintained. Never swim near boats, marinas, or boat ramps, as stray electrical currents can pose a serious risk of electric shock.
Under the Sun: Heat and Weather Awareness
-
Dress Smart: Wear light-colored, lightweight, and breathable clothing. Don’t forget your hat, sunglasses, and SPF 15+ sunscreen.
-
Hydrate Often: Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids to stay hydrated, no matter your activity level.
-
Watch the Weather: Be aware of changing conditions. Seek shelter immediately if you hear thunder or see lightning, especially if you’re on elevated terrain or open water.
-
Stay Informed: Tune in to local weather updates or check a NOAA weather radio for real-time alerts.
