Festivals, farm outings and seasonal markets offer plenty of reasons to explore.
By Leslie Clines
Fall is one of my favorite times of year in Blount County, Alabama. Festivals, farms, markets and family-friendly activities give residents and visitors plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy the season.
Use the months below as a planning guide. Exact dates, activities and operating schedules can change each year. Check with event organizers before making your plans.
September: Blount County Fair
The Blount County Fair brings families and communities together with carnival rides, fair food, livestock shows, exhibits and activities for the kids. Past offerings have included pig races, adding another reason to join the fun.
The fair is held at the Blount County Multipurpose Center, 6700 County Highway 1 in Cleveland.
September: Apple Festival at Hazelrig Orchards
If you enjoy a good apple this time of year, watch for the Apple Festival at Hazelrig Orchards. A trip to the orchard is a great way to enjoy fall while supporting a local agricultural business.
Find Hazelrig Orchards at 64241 U.S. Highway 231 in Cleveland. Confirm the festival’s annual schedule before visiting.
October: Covered Bridge Festival
The Covered Bridge Festival is a Blount County tradition. Held in downtown Oneonta, it celebrates local history, businesses, artists, vendors and the county’s historic covered bridges.
Past festivals have included free bus tours of the three covered bridges. Check each year’s program for tour availability and other activities.
It’s an opportunity to spend the day downtown, browse local businesses and street vendors, and enjoy the festival atmosphere.
Seasonal Farm Adventures
Blount County’s farms offer more ways to enjoy an autumn outing. Check each farm’s annual calendar for opening months, activities and hours.
West Blount Corn Maze offers a corn maze and seasonal activities for a family afternoon outdoors. Themes change, giving returning visitors something new to discover.
2543 Rock Springs Road, Warrior
Moody Farms and The Great Pumpkin Patch are additional stops to consider for pumpkins, fall activities and family photos.
Moody Farms: 1489 Valley Road, Oneonta
The Great Pumpkin Patch: 288 County Highway 45, Hayden
November: Holly Jolly Market at Allman Farms
As the holiday season approaches, the Holly Jolly Market at Allman Farms offers an opportunity to shop local, find unique gifts and support vendors and farmers.
Find Allman Farms at 6866 County Road 29 in Oneonta. Verify the market’s date and vendor lineup each year.
Make a Fall Weekend of It
One of the best things about fall in Blount County is the variety. You can spend one weekend at a festival, the next visiting an orchard or farm, and another exploring downtown Oneonta or enjoying a local restaurant.
Leave time for the seasonal scenery at Palisades Park, Rickwood Caverns State Park, the county’s covered bridges or a stop along the Locust Fork River.
These events and attractions support local businesses and give visitors another reason to experience Blount County.
