Take the Detour to Eufaula: Where Charm Meets Flavor

Last Updated 6/16/2025Posted in Featured, Eufaula, AL South

Eufaula is one of those places that feels like it belongs in a storybook. With streets lined by towering oaks, grand antebellum homes, and the sparkling waters of Lake Eufaula—the Bass Fishing Capital of the World—it’s a town full of history, beauty, and a few fun surprises. (Did you know it’s home to one of the South’s biggest bass tournaments and a famous ghost or two?)

While our friends at Alabama Black Belt Adventures featured Cajun Corner in the Back Road Bites road trip series, the Eufaula–Barbour County Chamber of Commerce decided we couldn’t stop there. They invited us to take a delicious detour and showcase even more of the flavors waiting to be discovered in their charming, walkable downtown. From smoky barbecue to fresh donuts and cozy country kitchens, it’s time to eat your way through Eufaula—and trust us, you’ll be glad you did.

Phil's BBQ

A true Eufaula classic, Phil’s BBQ is a smoky slice of Southern tradition. Their ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender, pulled pork is perfectly seasoned, and the house-made sauce brings it all together. It’s a no-frills joint where the focus is flavor, not fanfare. Sides like mac and cheese and baked beans make it a complete comfort meal. Whether you’re eating in or grabbing a plate to-go, Phil’s delivers that slow-cooked, deep-smoked goodness that keeps people coming back for more.

Donut King

Bright and welcoming, Donut King is Eufaula’s go-to for sweet morning treats. Their classic yeast donuts, fritters, and cake varieties are made fresh daily and disappear fast. With seasonal flavors and colorful toppings, there’s something for every donut lover. Regulars stop in early for coffee and conversation, while travelers are drawn in by the heavenly aroma. It’s not just about breakfast—it’s about starting the day with a smile and a box of sugary goodness made with love.

El Jalisco

Bursting with flavor and fun, El Jalisco serves up crowd-pleasing Mexican favorites with flair. Fajitas arrive sizzling, tacos are bright with fresh toppings, and the queso is dangerously addictive. Margaritas—especially the jumbo ones—are a must. With quick service, colorful décor, and a lively vibe, it’s great for group dinners or casual nights out. Affordable prices and generous portions make El Jalisco a beloved favorite for both locals and visitors looking for a fiesta on a plate.

Oak and Valley

Oak and Alley blends small-town charm with a touch of city style. This stylish eatery serves up gourmet burgers, loaded appetizers, and creative cocktails in a warm, rustic-modern space. It’s the perfect mix of upscale and casual, making it ideal for a date night or dinner with friends. With rotating specials and local ingredients, there’s always something new to try. From the exposed brick to the friendly service, Oak and Alley delivers a standout Eufaula experience.

Texas Smoking Guns BBQ

Bringing bold Lone Star flavor to Alabama, Texas Smoking Guns BBQ is all about big, smoky meats done right. Brisket is the star—tender, juicy, and seasoned to perfection. Sausages, ribs, and pulled pork round out the lineup, with classic Southern sides like slaw and beans. The setting is laid-back and welcoming, and the smell of hickory smoke pulls you in from the road. It’s a no-nonsense, full-flavor stop that barbecue fans won’t want to miss.

Eufaula Sandwich Shop

A hidden gem in the heart of town, Eufaula Sandwich Shop offers classic deli-style comfort in a cozy, retro space. Their stacked sandwiches, grilled melts, and daily soups are simple, satisfying, and affordable. Friendly faces behind the counter and fast, made-to-order meals make it a favorite lunch stop. Whether you want a BLT, club sandwich, or a bowl of chili, it’s good food done right—with a side of local charm.

Barb's Country Kitchen

For down-home cooking that tastes like Sunday supper, head to Barb’s Country Kitchen. This comfort food haven serves meat-and-three-style meals, hot biscuits, and Southern classics that stick to your ribs. Daily specials include fried chicken, pork chops, and hearty casseroles, all made from scratch. Locals love the warm service and generous portions, while travelers discover a hidden treasure. It’s unpretentious, cozy, and full of flavor—just like grandma used to make.
