Where Heritage, Hospitality & Hometown Flavor Still Matter

Sponsored by the Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce

There’s something refreshing about Limestone County’s food scene. It doesn’t chase trends or try too hard to impress. Instead, restaurants here focus on what matters most: welcoming people, serving generous portions, and creating the kind of places locals recommend by name. From downtown Athens to the communities of Ardmore, Elkmont, and Greenbrier, Limestone County offers a mix of longtime Southern staples, familyowned favorites, hometown bakeries, seafood spots, and energetic downtown restaurants. Together, they create a food scene that feels authentic, approachable, and unmistakably North Alabama.

The Old Greenbrier Restaurant

27028 Old Highway 20, Madison, AL 35756

Since 1950, The Old Greenbrier Restaurant has served Limestone County with classic Southern hospitality and comfort food that keeps generations of families coming back. Family-owned for more than 70 years, the restaurant is known for menu sections called “From the Barnyard,” “From the Pond,” and “From the Seven Seas.” Guests flock to longtime favorites like barbecue, fried chicken, farm-raised catfish, fried shrimp, oysters, and seafood platters piled high with Southern staples. Located near Interstate 65 in the Greenbrier community, the restaurant remains a gathering place for church groups, celebrations, family dinners, and travelers passing through North Alabama. For many locals, eating at Greenbrier is more than a meal. It’s tradition.

Mildred’s Restaurant

17768 Alabama Highway 53, Ardmore, AL 35739

At Mildred’s Restaurant, Southern comfort food still rules the table. This longtime Ardmore favorite has earned a loyal following thanks to hearty meat-and-three cooking served with consistency and care. Daily specials often include fried chicken, hamburger steak, country-fried steak, mashed potatoes, butterbeans, turnip greens, cornbread, and homemade desserts. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, with regulars filling tables during breakfast and lunch throughout the week. It’s the kind of place where servers know customers by name and where the recipes feel tied directly to the community itself.

D&L Seafood

100 U.S. Highway 31 South, Athens, AL 35611
D&L Seafood proves great seafood isn’t limited to the coast. This Athens favorite has built a devoted customer base around seafood platters, fried shrimp, oysters, crab legs, catfish, and seafood boils served in generous portions. While the seafood draws plenty of attention, locals will quickly recommend the fish tacos, which have quietly become one of the restaurant’s standout menu items. The atmosphere stays relaxed and welcoming, focusing on quality food and friendly service over anything flashy. In many ways, D&L Seafood reflects Limestone County itself: hardworking, welcoming, and full of flavor.
