The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is not just an opportunity to observe birds, it's a chance to connect with nature and other people who share the same passion as you. By taking part you can deepen your appreciation for the environment and you may even help discover a new species! So grab your binoculars, head outside, and join MILLIONS of other bird watchers in the GBBC!

When It Happens:

The 2025 event is scheduled for February 14-17.

How It Works:

Participants count and identify birds, then submit their observations online through apps like eBird app, eBird Website, or the Merlin Bird ID app.

Participants will pick a spot, whether it be your own backyard, local parks, nature reserves, or any outdoor location and then count birds for 15 minutes or as long as they like on one or more days of the event.

Purpose:

This event helps gather data on bird populations and is detrimental to scientists, as it helps them track trends, migration patterns, and potential changes due to climate or environmental factors.

Who Can Participate?

Everyone, regardless of age or skill level.

Organizers:

Joint effort by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada.

Understanding bird movements and numbers helps assess the impact of habitat loss, pollution, and climate changes. We encourage you to get out and learn about different bird species in your area and the ecosystems they live in.
