Beyond the Borders: Holiday Magic Worth the Drive

There’s something about Christmas that makes us wander. Maybe it’s the glow of twinkle lights reflecting off old brick buildings or the familiar sound of “Jingle Bells” echoing down a small-town street. Maybe it’s that cozy mix of nostalgia and discovery that makes us want to see how other towns celebrate the season. Whatever the reason, once the Alabama Christmas Road Trip winds to its close, the holiday spirit doesn’t stop at the state line.

Just across the border, west Georgia offers a trio of towns where the magic continues — Bowdon, Carrollton, and Villa Rica. Each has its own rhythm of celebration, from candlelit shopping strolls and skating rinks to light-filled train rides and parades that sparkle well into the night. Together, they’re a perfect “bonus chapter” to your Christmas adventure — proof that sometimes the best memories are made when you go just a little beyond the borders.

Bowdon by Candlelight: A Storybook Start to the Season

If you roll just a few miles east of the Alabama line, you’ll find Bowdon — a town that feels tailor-made for a Hallmark movie set. When December comes, this little community turns its downtown into a holiday postcard for Bowdon by Candlelight.

Shop windows glow with tiny lights, and the smell of cider drifts through the air as local stores stay open late for a weekend of small-town cheer. Families wander from shop to shop, greeting neighbors and listening to carolers while the courthouse clock ticks softly in the background.

Heritage Park hosts the town's Christmas tree lighting, complete with cocoa, music, and the kind of warmth that doesn't just come from the crowd – it comes from community. The weekend closes with Bowdon's beloved Christmas Parade, where Santa makes his grand entrance and the crowd cheers like they're welcoming an old friend.

In Bowdon, Christmas feels personal. It's the kind of celebration that invites you to linger, slow down, and remember why these little towns capture our hearts year after year.

Carrollton: Where Culture Meets Christmas Cheer

Drive a little farther, and you’ll reach Carrollton, a vibrant hub where art, music, and merriment meet. During the holidays, this city doesn’t just decorate — it performs.

At the Carrollton Center for the Arts, creativity takes centerstage with the annual Small Packages exhibit, a giftable art show running from November 6 to December 13. It’s a treasure trove of handcrafted pieces — paintings, pottery, and ornaments —perfect for finding something special.

On stage, the Carroll County Community Theatre presents All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, reminding audiences of the season’s deeper message of peace and connection. The Carroll Symphony Orchestra and Community Chorus then carry that theme forward with Christmas in Carrollton: Handel’s Messiah on December 13, filling the theater with soaring voices and candlelit reverence.

Outdoors, Carrollton brings winter to Georgia with Carrollton on Ice, a covered skating rink that transforms East Carrollton Park into a wonderland of lights and laughter. Families glide beneath a canopy of twinkling stars while food trucks serve cocoa and funnel cakes nearby. And on December 6, downtown bursts into full celebration with Christmas in Downtown Carrollton. The day begins with crafts and kids’ activities on Adamson Square, and as dusk falls, the Christmas Parade rolls through town, lighting up the night with floats, music, and memories in the making. Carrollton captures that rare blend of sophistication and small-town spirit — where you can admire art one minute and wave at Santa the next.

Villa Rica: A Wonderland on Rails

If Bowdon is cozy and Carrollton is cultured, then Villa Rica is pure spectacle. The city’s Christmas on Main celebration, set for December 6, transforms its downtown and The MILL Amphitheater into a winter carnival of sound and light.

The day kicks off with the Reindeer Run 5K and Mistletoe Market, where local vendors fill the streets with handmade gifts and seasonal treats. By afternoon, families line the sidewalks for the Christmas Parade, waving as twinkling floats pass and the first notes of holiday music fill the air. When the lights on the towering downtown tree flicker on, it feels like the whole town takes a collective breath — and then cheers.

But the real magic lies just beyond Main Street at Villa Rica’s Winter Wonderland Train Ride, now entering its thirteenth year. This isn’t just a train ride — it’s a mile-long journey through more than ten miles of holiday lights, a glowing tunnel of color and imagination.

Visitors can take free photos with Santa, roast gourmet s’mores by the firepit, and meet a playful cast of characters — the Yeti, cheerful elves, and a teddy bear or two ready for selfies. Kids write letters to Santa at cozy stations, while parents sip cocoa and listen to laughter echo through the crisp night air. With free parking, festive food vendors, and memories at every turn, Winter Wonderland is one of those rare experiences that feels timeless — something families come back to year after year, adding new stories with every ride.

A Joyful Journey, Just Beyond the Line

For travelers exploring Alabama’s small towns this Christmas, crossing the border into Georgia is like unwrapping one more present. From Bowdon’s candlelit streets to Carrollton’s artistic glow and Villa Rica’s mile of lights, these towns shine bright with hospitality and heart.

Each one reminds us that holiday magic doesn’t stop at the state line — it just changes accent. So when your Christmas road trip winds down and you’re not quite ready to let go of that festive feeling, follow the glow eastward. You’ll find the lights still shining, the cocoa still warm, and the welcome every bit as bright.

Because sometimes, the best part of the journey happens just beyond the borders.
