This magazine is all about makers… so I thought it was fitting to learn something about Maker’s Mark.

Nestled in the hills of Loretto, Kentucky, Maker’s Mark stands as one of the most iconic names in American bourbon. Known for its smooth flavor, unique bottle, and signature red wax seal, Maker’s Mark has carved out a reputation for craftsmanship and tradition since it was founded in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr.

Maker’s Mark has a unique approach to bourbon making. Instead of using the typical rye grain found in most bourbons, Maker’s uses red winter wheat in its blend of grains. This small but significant change results in a softer, sweeter flavor profile. Aged “to taste” rather than to a set number of years, every bottle is released only when the bourbon is deemed ready by the master distiller.

The unique red wax that seals every bottle is more than just a seal; it’s a symbol of hand-crafted excellence. Each bottle is hand-dipped, making no two exactly alike. Whether sipped neat, poured over ice, or mixed into a classic cocktail, Maker’s Mark remains a benchmark in the world of bourbon.

I wanted to round off the article with a drink that uses something made — honey! Hence, I found a cocktail called Gold Rush. It is simple to make and uses easy-to-find ingredients: local honey, water and lemon juice.

What you need to make the Gold Rush cocktail

  • 2 ounces bourbon

  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed

  • 3/4 ounce honey syrup

  • lemon twist for garnish

First create a honey syrup by stirring equal parts honey and water together until fully dissolved. This will allow the honey to more easily mix into the drink. If you want a more rich taste, add more honey. Fresh lemon juice is key to cut through the honey and bourbon and bring balance to the cocktail. Place all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake until well chilled. Pour through a strainer into a cocktail glass filled with ice, garnish with a twist of lemon and sip away!
