Merrily Mahjong: The Gift of a Classic Game

Mahjong Game

By Mary Lee Caldwell

Dots, Craks, and Bam! I fell head over heels for mahjong about a year ago. What started as casual curiosity (thanks to those aesthetic tile pics all over my friends’ Instagram stories) quickly became one of my favorite ways to laugh, strategize, and spend real quality time with the people I love.

At first glance, mahjong can look like a mix of hieroglyphics and calculus — so many tiles! so many rules! — and yes, it may seem a little too trendy to be timeless. But oh, it’s both! With roots deep in Chinese history and a global modern revival, this game brings culture, connection, and competition together in the most delightful way.

Mahjong is a strategy tile game that originated in China in the late 19th century and first became popular in the U.S. during the Roaring Twenties. American mahjong has been guided by the National Mahjong League since 1937 — the ultimate authority keeping things fresh with their annual Official Standard Hands and Rules Card. (Translation: the game literally changes every year!)

In its 88 years, the League has grown to over 350,000 members, and the craze is only growing stronger. From themed mahjong nights to charity tournaments, the game is everywhere — on calendars, on TikTok, and in the living rooms of celebrities like Julia Roberts, Savannah Guthrie, Jenna Bush Hager, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Sure, the tiles are gorgeous, but the benefits of mahjong are even better! Mahjong is like yoga for your brain: improving memory, focus, and strategy skills while helping reduce stress. According to The Journal of Prevention for Alzheimer’s Disease (2024), playing mahjong regularly supports better cognitive function, uplifts your mood, and can even ease symptoms of depression.

Personally, I’ve found the best benefit of all — connection. Mahjong has introduced me to amazing new friends and strengthened old bonds. There’s just something special about sharing stories, laughter, and the satisfying click-clack of tiles around the table.

Yes, mahjong looks complicated, but don’t let that scare you off! My golden rule: give yourself grace while you learn. Ask questions. Laugh at your mistakes. Dive in and play! The magic of mahjong is that it feels hard to learn but is actually easy (and addictive) once you start.

And the best part? With mahjong’s modern comeback, resources are everywhere! You can:
• Take a class with a local teacher
• Watch YouTube and Instagram tutorials
• Read guides and books
• Learn from a friend who’s already obsessed (and probably dying to teach you — seriously, just ask them!)

Whether you’re a seasoned player or just learning your first Charleston, my wish for you is simple: may the jokers be with you all of the holiday season!

Here’s to friends, fun, and a little friendly competition.
Merrily Mahjong, everyone!
